GP OUT OF HOURS SERVICE / NHS DIRECT

Your family doctor (GP) is responsible for providing care to you during normal working hours, that is Monday to Friday 8.00am to 6.30pm (excluding bank and public holidays).
GP Out of Hours Services provide health care for urgent medical problems outside normal surgery hours. This service is available for urgent medical situations only.
If you have a medical emergency, a critical or life threatening problem you should call 999 or visit your nearest Emergency (A&E) Department, day or night.
If you have an open wound which may need stitching/dressing, you should go direct to your nearest Emergency (A&E) Department or Minor Injury Unit (MIU), or if it is an emergency call 999.
What should I do if I have an urgent health problem outside of my GP surgery opening hours?
Outside normal surgery hours you can still phone your GP surgery, but you’ll usually be directed to an out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours period is from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.
The Out of Hours Service is provided by Hywel Dda University Health Board “Care on Call”.
Emergency Contact Number is 111
You can use the service during these times if you feel unwell or are worried that you may need urgent medical care that cannot wait until your GP surgery is next open.
Your call will be answered by a trained call taker who will take your name, address, date of birth and a brief outline of your problem.
Your call will then be passed to a Triage Nurse who will contact you as soon as possible to discuss your problem and agree the most appropriate course of action.
( Please keep your telephone line clear for the nurse’s call.)
This may include resolving your problem with telephone advice, being asked to attend an out of hours treatment centre or, if clinically appropriate, for seriously ill housebound patients, a home visit from the doctor.
Please remember that Out of Hours service provision is limited and that Home Visits are only intended for truly housebound seriously ill patients.
Dental Problems / Toothache
Please DO NOT contact the GP Out of Hours Service for Dental problems or Toothache.
Please contact your normal dental practice who should direct you to the Out of Hours Dental Service.
If you do not have a dentist or are unable to access services you should contact the NHS Emergency Dental Service on 08454647 NOT the GP Out of Hours Service
